Serena Williams hails Tiger Woods’ influence as she continues her US Open run
Serena Williams says that she is a fan of the famous golfer Tiger Woods, and that they are actually quite close.
The 29-year-old tennis star has been enjoying her run to the women’s final at the US Open since her opening match against Angelique Kerber, before the German had to withdraw with the recurrence of a calf injury.
The Williams sisters and Woods have also been chatting on Twitter for the US Open, with Serena making a cryptic comment that she wishes that Tiger “had a shot in hell” of being on the same Grand Slam court as she does.
“She’s a great sport. She’s very nice, which is nice,” Serena said of Williams.
“She’s not the happiest person and she’s not the most happy person, but she’s like our sister. She’s like my sister. I don’t think she’s a great athlete, but I don’t think we’re going to compete that much.”
Williams had played on Williams’ two biggest Slam titles in 2009 and 2011, but has managed to remain on top of the game over the past year, with 12 Grand Slams and a number of other major titles to her name.
It is her fourth major championship overall after Wimbledon, the US Open, the Australian Open, and the French Open, but she has not won a single match at the tournament since 2012.
“I don’t understand that, it doesn’t make sense, is what it is,” added Williams, who won the French Open last year despite having to fight off the world No.1 on Centre Court.
“I have a lot of goals, I don’t think about the one that came before. I will think about it when I have a good one coming, I don’t look at the one behind.”
Williams’ current career-high ranking is No. 2 in the world after winning this year’s WTA event in New Orleans in the first Grand Slam event she hasn’t lost in since the 2010 US Open.
It is the second time she has failed to pick up a grand slam title since 2012, and her last win at this event was when she beat Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-
