Doctor Pompeo says she's not feeling "checked out"

Ellen Pompeo isn’t fully checked out of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: ‘I’ll definitely be back’

In addition to working as an OB-GYN, she’s also seen as a mother and a wife. But even as a doctor, nothing about the TV actor seems to be slowing down. On ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo plays Dr. Derek Shepherd with a certain swagger.

“I’ve got 10 days off next week,” she said, adding that she and her husband, actor Scott Porter, have been married for 15 years. She says it has nothing to do with her relationship with her co-stars on the show.

“All I do is work out, I try to do the best I can.”

And while there is still plenty of life in her body and she’s not completely “checked out,” she says a little weight gain and muscle spandex are helping her work out. “I used to go to the gym in my old job, and it would make me feel uncomfortable,” she said. “I didn’t feel comfortable.”

“I’m like ‘I’ll stop doing that, you’re too busy,’” she said in a phone interview from Los Angeles, where she’s filming the Season 5 finale of Grey’s Anatomy. “I like to try new things, I’ve always wanted to be on TV. So I’ve looked at Grey’s as an outlet.”

Pompeo had the opportunity to appear on Grey’s Anatomy before on The Big Bang Theory, where she was on set for nearly five years. But she felt it was a different experience working with co-stars Kaley Cuoco and Ellen Pompeo.

“There was definitely an initial awkwardness,” Pompeo said of working on the show with the stars of the ABC sitcom. “It was so weird. We were all doing the same stuff,” she said. “And we were all doing it with each other. It was very strange. But I just enjoyed it. And it was so nice that Kaley and Ellen were so welcoming to me.”
