Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas defeat American big hitters to reach Cincinnati Open semifinals

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) – In the first Grand Slam event back after the ten-week break, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas produced a dramatic win to reach their first Grand Slam semifinals at the 2012 US Open.

Medvedev’s strong serve and a strong return put him on the inside as he moved to 6-3 in the opening set against the No. 10-ranked Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas had a break point in that set but couldn’t convert. In the second, he toughed out a tiebreak (18, 19) to take the match 3-2.

Medvedev now leads Tsitsipas by five points as the winner will advance to face American big hitter Andy Roddick.

“It was definitely one of my best ever matches,” Medvedev said. “I was trying to put Tsitsipas under pressure, and I guess that did just that. I was playing my shots very well in the first set and then I was able to break the serve after that and finish the match off. It got close and then got the best out of us. I think we both fought our hearts out and I’m very proud of how I played. And even more happy for Stefanos who was getting his first Grand Slam quarterfinal and will be getting his first Grand Slam semifinal this year.”
